life on campus

Life on campus
I had the opportunity to attend an art exhibition on campus and what a beauty it was. The University of the Free State has an art gallery, Johannes Stegmann Art Gallery situated at Sasol library. On 09/04/2014 was the official opening of the annual student art exhibition, the title this year is OCULUS which is the Italian word for eye. The event was well attended, Dean of faculty of humanities Professor. LJS Botes was also present.  when entering the gallery, we were welcomed with music by a live band. Before the procession, attendees where served snacks with wine and juice. Students who study B.A degree in fine arts created the master pieces, wanted the audience to be aware of how they view art.  Angela was the mc of the event, she started off by greeting the attendees and then went on introducing the guest speaker Elrie Joubert,  a lecturer at the Department of Graphic Desig, Joubert mentioned that the main idea behind the setup of the exhibition, it is divided in two categories: man-made objects and nature, on the left hand side of the gallery where man-made objects and on the left is was nature, it was said these two sides where communicating with each other and at the back was self-portraits symbolising that they are staring back at us. It is amazing on how a lot of effort is put on the set up of the gallery on would think they just placed them there. The main idea of the student exhibition is to give art student the opportunity to showcase their work and get recognition, some of the paintings were up for sale ranging from R115-3000. The exhibition will run until 2/05/2014, it is open for public.
